FIELD NOTES

The Dance

There's a note I wrote to myself a long time ago.

Just one sentence.

"Feeling like a tourist in my own mind."

I came across it today.

And it felt strangely familiar.

Lately I haven't felt like myself.

Not emotionally.

Physically.

Dizzy.

Anxious.

Disoriented.

Unfocused.

Like my own mind has become unfamiliar territory.

I've experienced seasons like this before.

Usually I find something.

A correction.

A routine.

A perspective.

Something shifts and eventually I find my way back.

This time feels different.

Because I don't know whether what I'm experiencing is physical...

or whether my body is simply speaking a language my mind hasn't learned yet.

And maybe that's why it's been so unsettling.

It feels like I'm walking through a place that belongs to me...without recognizing any of it.

Like visiting a hometown after enough years have passed that everything is still there...

but none of it feels familiar.

The strange thing is that while writing this, I noticed something.

I keep saying:

"I'm experiencing this."

Not:

"This is me."

Maybe that matters.

Because if I'm experiencing it...

then there must also be something doing the experiencing.

Something watching all of this unfold.

The dizziness.

The anxiety.

The confusion.

The fear.

The observer is still here.

The problem is that understanding that...

and living from it...

are two completely different things.

I know the words.

I've written about them before.

That I am not every thought.

Not every emotion.

Not every sensation.

But knowing something intellectually doesn't always quiet the nervous system.Sometimes the body keeps dancing...

long after the mind understands the music.

And maybe that's where I've been getting stuck.

I've been trying to solve a dance.

Every uncomfortable feeling becomes a puzzle.

Every anxious moment becomes something to fix.

Every strange sensation becomes another question demanding an answer.

The harder I try to force the next step...

the more rigid I become.

I heard a song recently about the dance between light and darkness.

It reminded me that neither side wins by force.

A dance isn't mastered by fighting the rhythm.

It's mastered by learning to move with it.

Maybe that's what's been missing.

Not another insight.

Not another breakthrough.

Not another perfect perspective.

Maybe just enough humility to admit that I don't know what's happening right now.

And enough courage to stay anyway.

Because if I'm honest...

I've spent most of this season reaching.

Reaching for distraction.

Reaching for certainty.

Reaching for something that makes me feel like myself again.

Anything that interrupts the friction.

Anything that lets me step outside the discomfort for a little while. But every escape has the same ending.

Eventually it wears off.

And I'm standing right back where I started.

Maybe the hardest thing isn't enduring the struggle.

Maybe it's refusing to run from it.

Not because I enjoy suffering.

Not because I think pain is noble.

But because life keeps reminding me that every time I outrun discomfort...

I also outrun the opportunity to understand it.

So maybe there isn't a conclusion tonight.

Maybe there isn't supposed to be.

Maybe this reflection isn't about finding peace.

Maybe it's simply about telling the truth.

That right now...

I feel like a tourist in my own mind.

And while I don't recognize the landscape...

I'm beginning to wonder if healing isn't about finding my way out as quickly as possible.

Maybe it's about learning how to walk through unfamiliar territory...

without convincing myself that because the landscape has changed...

I've somehow become a stranger to myself.
